Cambuslang Harriers travelled to Drumpellier Park for the Lanarkshire Cross Country Championships last weekend .On a day more suited to an afternoon by the fire with a plate of broth, great credit goes to all the athletes who participated in the tough conditions brought on by the poor weather. The conditions did not dampen the spirits of the Cambuslang athletes though, as they went on to have another good day of competition.
The first race of the day saw the under 11s girls take 3rd team prize with good runs from Niamh O’Donnell 7th, Larissa Rankin 12th and Neave Brown 13th. Not to be out done the U11 boys also took 3rd team prize with Keith McIntyre 11th, Ryan Miller 17th and Michael O’Donnell 20th. Well done to all the clubs younger athletes, many competing at cross country for the first time.
The under 13 races, Rebecca Bonomi produce a strong finish to take 12th place. In the boy’s race, determined running from Ryan Thomson 4th and Ross Stephen 5th, backed up by Dean McMurran in 10th, they won team silver behind Law & District Harriers.
Cambuslang entered a strong contingent of runners in the u15 age category. It was pleasing to see a welcome return to form from Mairi Brown, running well to finish 2nd. Lucy Deeny continued her good progress in recent weeks taking 4th place and Shereen Smith in 15th brought the girls home to take team silver.
The u15 boys event saw Cambuslang pack five runners in the top half of the field. Stewart Orr produced a strong 2nd lap of the course to draw clear and win by 10 seconds. In a close finish Jack Hamilton took bronze. With Michael Rankin 4th the guys won the team title ahead of local rivals, Shettleston Harriers.
Cambuslang picked up more medals in the u17 races. Danielle Melville ran arguably her best race to date with a fine individual silver with Steph Wright finishing 4th. Andrew Coulter ran strongly and finished well clear in second place in the boys race. Corin Gallacher 4th and Jordan Samson 13th brought the team home in 2nd.
The men’s race over four gruelling laps (approx 6miles) Cambuslang’s seniors packed well. Robert Gilroy 4th, Ian Reid 5th, Jack Brown 6th and Greg Hastie in 7th secured another team silver for Cambuslang. The club now looks forward to next week’s West District Championship at Irvine.
