Cambuslang Harriers………West District Championships
Ronhill Cambuslang Harriers returned jubilant from the West District Cross Country Championships at Irvine Moor recently. The athletes scored a number of successes despite having to tough it out in extreme weather conditions of icy winds and rain.
Top of the pile were Cambuslangs’ U15 boys team, who won team gold fairly convincingly from Giffnock North AC. Jack Hamilton produced a fantastic run to finish second, forcing the pace early he stretched the field out and didn’t let the opposition settle. Only in the closing stages after a tight battle, Jack settled for silver from a fast finishing Craig Wellcoat of Law & District. Stewart Orr came through strongly in the 2nd lap to emerge from the chasing pack to take bronze and team was backed up with a fine run Michael Rankin in 7th, despite just returning from injury. Liam Deeny and Ryan Harkin also produced good performances in this race.
Cambuslangs’ senior men won team silver in the 10km event. Cambuslang packed six runners in the top 21 places with Steven Wylie 5th, Jamie Reid 9th, Robert Gilroy 14th, Ian Reid 16th, Kerry Wilson 20th and Jack Brown in 21st brought the team home in a tight contest just behind Shettleston Harriers.
Also picking up medals, the u15 girl’s team took team bronze. Great credit to Mairi Brown who went from strength to strength as the race progressed to finish 8th, Lucy Deeny 14th and Shereen Smith 32nd, the girls establishing themselves amongst the best teams in district.
Other notable performances came from the U13 boys’ team of Ryan Thomson, Ross Stephen and Dean McMurran finishing 4th team. Caitlin Hendry finished a creditable 9th, continuing her good progress this winter in the u17 girls’ race. In the u17 boys event Andrew Coulter ran tactically very well to push clear of a group of four other athletes in the closing stages to finish 11th. A number of Cambuslang athletes can now look forward to representing the West District team at the Inter District Championships in January and all at the club wish them well.
