4 club athletes competed for the Scottish team at the annual British & Irish Masters XC International at Perry Barr, Birmingham on Saturday 14th November 2009. After a preceding day of incessant rain and a weather warning of gale force winds, David Fairweather was first off in the 6k M65 race. The course consisted of a 2km loop without any killer hills, except for the final 150 metres of the race. Continuing his recent good form, David had an excellent run and came through very strong on the last of 3 laps to be the 1st Scottish counter in 27m18s, leading the team to silver medals.
Next up was Archie Jenkins in the 2nd race, 4 laps of 2k incorporating the M50’s, M55 and M60’s age groups. With the course beginning to cut up quite badly, Archie once again produced a very consistent race to be 3rd counter for the Scottish team in a time of 34m21s as the Scots picked up the bronze medals.
The M35’s, M40’s and M45’s race saw Neil Wilkinson in the M40 race and Colin Feechan stepping back an age group to run for the M45’s. With another 4 laps to cover and the course beginning to represent a quagmire in parts, Neil was first Scot home in 29m43s with the team just missing out on medals. Further down the field Colin managed to finish ahead of 2 other Scots in his 1st international race with a time of 33m34s, again the team finished just out of the medal positions.
This was a great weekend with excellent camaraderie amongst the Scots athletes, a great opportunity to mix with guys that you normally run head to head with or only see on the results pages of races. The club plan to be down in Birmingham on May 15th 2010 to mix it with the best of British once again at the BMAF road relays champs, start your planning now.
