Ronhill Cambuslang Harriers returned from the West District Cross Country Championships, encouraged by a number of good individual and team performances at Irvine Moor .

With a bright dry day, the course in good condition and with selection places up for grabs for the West Team at next months Inter-Counties Championships in Edinburgh, all augured well for a good day of racing.

In the first race of the day, Cambuslang’s under 13 girls got the action under way. Eve McKinnon improving with every race finished 13th , and with Sophie Hayes and Rachel Black running well, the girls team finished 8th, gaining invaluable experience along the way.

Next up it was the turn of the under 13 boys. Jack McGregor buoyed by his recent win at the Lanarkshire Championships started off very aggressively, leading the front pack in the early stages.
Jack settled into his running mid-race and finished a very creditable 9th place.  A fast finishing Keith McIntyre in 17th and a solid run from Joe Brown brought the boys team home, just out of the medals  in 4th place.

Mairi Brown produced Cambuslang’s best female performance of the day. Following on from her good run at Gateshead recently. Mairi finished 6th in the combined U15/ u17 girls race. Rebecca Bonomi and Sarah Miller acquitted themselves well to finish inside the top twenty amongst the u15’s.

Cambuslang’s U15 boys secured the clubs’ first medals of the day taking team bronze.  Ryan Thomson came through the field strongly in the second half to finish 9th and just pipped Matthew McKenna in10th, who had earlier pursued the race with great endeavour. Ross Stephen just recovering from a heavy cold, passed around a dozen places in the last mile to give the lads a well deserved set of bronze medals.

A further medal was secured in the u17 boys’ race over 6km. Jack Hamilton continued his excellent form this season to take the silver medal in runners-up spot. Cheered on by the club’s supporters, Jack was involved in a tremendous tussle for the title, with Craig Wellcoat of Law and District. The outcome was only decided in the last half mile, with Jack pressing hard all the way to the finish line.

As the racing concluded for the day with the senior mens 10km race. Cambuslang were pleased to pick up a set of team medals winning bronze. With many good individual battles happening throughout the race, Cambuslang packed three runners inside the top twenty. Led home by Robert Gilroy 11th, and with Johnny MacNamara finishing 15th, Kerry Wilson 16th. The experienced trio progressed through the field as the race developed providing the team with a solid platform. Backed up with Stuart Gibson 21st, junior Andrew Coulter 25th and the resurgent Gordon Robertson in 45th, Cambuslang took a well deserved third place in the team standings.

Further good news was announced at the presentation when Andrew Coulter was awarded a bronze for placing third u20 . Andrew has worked hard raising his fitness levels since joining the senior ranks this year, and it was great to see him rewarded for his efforts.
