The club had an excellent number of performances at the Masters National XC Championships, held in Forres on Saturday 6th February 2010. After the dust had settled we had accumulated a total of 7 individual medals together with retaining the team prize, making for a successful event for the red and white.
After meeting up with the rest of the lads, some leaving it a bit late to get their numbers, it was toes on the line and off we went. 2 small laps, before 2 big laps. Davie Rodgers shot into the lead, with Steve Cairns behind, with Kerry Wilson and Jamie Reid tucked in around 7-8th place. As the pace settled down, Kerry and Jamie moved into 3rd & 4th, with Colin Donnelly in 5th, a fine packing performance right away. Things stayed
that way until towards the end of the first big lap when Kerry pulled away from Jamie and began to pull in Cairns. After catching Stevie, Kerry had Davie in his sights and caught him going up the tough hill on the
last big lap. Kerry caught and passed Davie, who looked to be struggling, as did Stevie Cairns. Unfortunately for Jamie, he began to feel the effects of a lack of racing, and could do nothing other than watch as Stevie, David and Kerry pulled further away from him in the last mile. Behind, Colin Donnelly was solid in 5th place, a few weeks after a henia operation it has to be said, ensuring victory for the team. Indeed our last counter was home before the 1st counter for the 2nd placed team.
Kerry pulled away to record a fabulous victory and first National title, and this was just reward for the work put in during the past year. Davie finished in 2nd place and 1st M40, with Jamie 2nd M35 in 4th overall. Colin Donnelly was a superb 5th (1st M50). Behind, Ross Arbuckle took 2nd M45 in 16th place, with Colin Feechan the 6th M50 in 28th place overall, a few strides ahead of Frankie Barton (7th M50).
Next home for the club was Archie Jenkins in 47th overall, securing the 3rd M55 medal, followed by Jimmy Zaple in 57th place, Sandy Eaglesham in 67th, and David Fairweather 83rd and 3rd M65.
A fine turnout of 11 runners, travelling from all around the UK, with some fine performances. A fine weekend, good team bonding, with some excellent performances. Congrats especially to Kerry Wilson, Davie Rodgers and Colin Donnelly for their National titles and to Jamie for joining them to make it 3 successive team titles - superb.
