Sport: Special award for Harriers’ Owen Reid
CAMBUSLANG Harriers’ Owen Reid was the recipient of a special honour handed out to very deserving local sports people.
Each year Cambuslang and Rutherglen Sports Council presents an award to an individual who, over many years, has contributed to sport in the Cambuslang and Rutherglen area through coaching, administration or for all the unseen duties that are often taken for granted.
This award is made in partnership with the Scottish Association of Local Sports Councils and sportscotland.
Sports council chairman Frank Mulligan said: “Our worthy Services to Sport winner this year is a man who has shown huge commitment and dedication to the sport of Athletics. He has supported one of the strongest clubs in our area.
“Our award winner is an active member of Cambuslang Harriers and has been for over 25 years.
“In the early 1990s he turned his attention to coaching.
“After gaining his coaching certificates he became a valuable member of the club's coaching team, applying his ideas and sharing his knowledge with Cambuslang's junior athletes.
“With his hard work ethics and common sense approach he has helped many athletes get the best out of themselves, many of whom over the last 20 years have gone on to win Scottish individual and team titles in the red and white vest of Cambuslang Harriers .
“Our winner coaches at the club five days per week, all voluntary and helps to develop some of the younger coaches at the club.
“He also sits on South Lanarkshire Athletics Partnership Committee helping to promote and further advance athletics in the area.”
A surprised and delighted Owen said: “I’m very pleased to receive this award.
“One doesn’t do it for awards, one does it for the love of what you are doing. It’s great, as it’s a fantastic honour to receive.
“We’re working with our runners on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.
“Young people get criticised these days, but there’s a lot of good youngsters out there, and our club is doing its bit to give them something to do.
“I think this is a collective honour for the Cambuslang Harriers, for the runners who come along and for all the coaches, everyone connected with the club, as I’m not the only one out there doing it.
“It’s recognition for all the coaches at the club.”
The sports council thanks SALSC representative Joy O'Brien for presenting the award to Owen.
